This Is What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

This is a great place to start if you're in the market.

As with any major purpose, you need to do extensive research before buying a used car. Whether it's your first vehicle or your fifth, you want to make sure you're investing in the best and safest option possible.

Engineer @pushingpistons posted a TikTok going over everything you should look for when you're in the market to purchase a used car. You may need to get down and dirty for some of these, but they are worth paying attention to.

As explained in the video, the first thing you need to do is get under the vehicle and check the frame of the car for signs of corrosion, rust or fluid leaks. You should see only a little bit of dripping from the AC and nothing else. Next, pop the hood and take out the dipstick to check the engine oil. If it looks cloudy or milk, that's a bad sign. Once you're behind the wheel, start the engine and observe the color of the exhaust smoke.

Before you make these checks, make sure you are in a safe public space.

"Also, don't forget to make sure it has a catalytic converter and they didn't weld a pipe in place of it," @mustang2048 suggested in the comments section. "Great advice. Also nice to check under the oil cap," @lawnchairtrev added. "If the other side of the oil cap is all crust, could indicate it wasn’t maintained."

Buying any type of car can be overwhelming. Take as long as you need to prepare so you can make the best purchase possible.
