Honoring Those Who Live to Ride -- Now and Forever

In Wisconsin's most scenic area is the first park of its kind in the nation: the Wisconsin Motorcycle Memorial. Located on the Door County peninsula between the city of Sturgeon Bay and the town of Carlville, the Memorial is five acres of garden oasis honoring all motorbike enthusiasts.

Set between Door County's two main highways, Highway 42 and Highway 57, amid corn and soybean fields (the legal address is 4758 Mathey Road, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235) the Memorial is a beautifully landscaped and quiet wayside for rest and contemplation.

Enter the park between fieldstone columns that support a shining sculptured arch. This isn't a cemetery; it's for people who love to ride or want to pay respects to fellow riders. The "Walkway of Remembrance" is paved with tribute stones carved with the names of motorcycle clubs and Wisconsin bikers, some of them living and some whose "souls ride on forever," says the granite dedication stone.

Founded by the Northeastern Wisconsin Bikers Association and dedicated in 2004, the Wisconsin Motorcycle Memorial is free to visitors. It supports itself with the purchase of 9x12-inch tribute stones, and its grounds are kept groomed by volunteer workers. There is a rest station and running water is available. Gatherings are sometimes held there.

Appropriately, the Memorial is off the beaten track, on a two-lane country road north of Sturgeon Bay and away from any commercial area. It does not appear on most Door County tourism maps, and the signs that point the way are few. Persist in seeking it if you want to visit a site that is the first of its kind and unique.
