Kit Car Manuals, References, and Guides

1. The Kit Car Manual

This is a nice little book on kit cars with updated examples of new designs and developments that have become available over the last few years.

The appendix includes the addresses of manufacturers and clubs around the world which is informative and valuable in your own kit car building adventures.

It is written in an easy-to-read and often humorous style that will take your mind off the frustrations of your own build and give you the inspiration to get back in the garage.

2. How to Use Composites in Kit Car Building

These three books on composite materials are among the best rated by fiberglass kit car builders. If you are building your own kit cars, you'll need to learn all you can about composites, from the safe use of materials to the best resin and fiber system including the different types of both resin and fiber.

The book has valuable info on fiberglass, carbon fiber, core materials and resins, plus recent advances in both materials and technologies.

This series starts off pretty basic so you can learn the ropes, then as the series progresses you'll get into advanced techniques you can apply to your kit car project.

Composite Materials Series Overview

  • The first book is a great intro to working with composites safely, laying out the tools and materials you'll need all in high-quality full color with plenty of detailed photos. This book walks you through four projects the final being a moldless lamination of a hood scoop, a perfect project to get you started on building that kit car. Includes a very helpful section on where to buy composites and resins for your project.
  • The second book in the series gives you a more in-depth explanation of working with composites starting with basic mold making. More advanced techniques are demonstrated as well including vacuum-bagging, inflatable bladder molding, trapped-rubber insert molding, or resin transfer molding
  • Book three really gets into the fun stuff with advanced mold making including using computer modeling software and silicone compression molds for complex shapes. You'll also learn how to do composite repairs a valuable tool when owning your own fiberglass kit car. The projects in this book include creating a body panel formed using an existing panel to make the mold. (along with a cool project on making a hollow body guitar off topic but still super cool).

      Bobby Spurlock -

your thinking of a Mustang II or Cobra II, 74-78, Farah Fawcett drove a 76 King Cobra II in Charlie's Angels,

yeah, nothing like a mustang, but kept the name alive during the OPEC years and the intro of Datsun's , Toyota's, Ford concentrated on the PINTO and MAVERICK (Mom had a Maverick) horrible cars made to look like foreign cars but still built like floating hulks of steel. amazingly, 4 of the top 10 sales years came with these Mustang II years,

and we all probably thought they were cool when Farah was driving it, but we also thought bell bottoms and 5" collars were cool too.

Im hoping somebody can help me with a name of a car. Back in the late 80's a friend of mine had a car with a big giant cobra decal on the hood but it wasn't a mustang and it wasn't a Shelby GT. Im almost positive that it was a kit car, the car was black with the cobra decal in gold and it was a compact sporty design, can anyone help me with what kind of car it is?

Has everyone one here lost there mind. All these kits are horrible. Nobody wants kits of these old ass cars. And dont even get me started on cobra kit and gt40 kits. The damn kit car worlds so wrapped up with these p.o.s. where is the luxurypart rebody kits the lamborghini reventon rebody kits. If your taking and old car and making it look like a million dollar super exotic its worth the time but to take a old p.o.s. and put a body on it to make it look like an older p.o.s well thats just dumb. If its not a replica of at least a 2005 or newer or a one off super exotic whats the point!!!

Some kit cars are poorly designed and do not have adjustments for seats, belts, etc. Also, some do not provide even basic safety design for occupant protection. Most people spend more time and money than planned before completing their kit project. Talk to several others who have successfully completed a kit car before attempting it yourself.

I can't imagine the hours of work it must take to make one of these. But the payoff is incredible!!! Be blessed!!!

I've always dreamed of having a 327 Cobra in the garage. The Mustang 5.0 based kits are fantastic. Fun lens... great job!

Some body kits are truly spectacular. I managed to drive a Shelby kit car with a real 427 in it. BEAST. All that matters is at the heart it's fast. I have even seen some Chrysler 300's turned into Rolls Royce Phantoms.
