Fastest Cars in the World: Top 10

Savio is a resident of Mumbai, India. Cars, bikes, and everything fast are his passion, and he writes about them on many sites.

The fastest cars are getting faster and are toppling each other out of the top spot almost every two years. These are the top ten cars as of now, since I keep updating them. Let’s have a look at them.

Jarod Shelby's Statement

1. Bugatti Chiron [1600 hp]

Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Hennessey were trading the top spot faster than ever, and here we have one more topper – the Bugatti Chiron. The Chiron did a top speed of 304 mph and is the first car to break the 300 mph barrier. While most of the world was expecting the Hennessey to break the barrier first, Bugatti stole the thunder. So, history will kindly remember the Bugatti for shattering the 300 mph barrier.

  • Top Speed: 304.77 mph (490.68 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.1 sec [Claimed]
  • Engine: 8.0 L Quad Turbocharged W16
  • Price: $2.8 million

Here's the Record Run:

2. Koenigsegg Agera RS

Koenigsegg pulled a Houdini on Bugatti Veyron. Just when Bugatti was transitioning to the Chiron and was expecting the Hennessey to challenge it to the top spot, Koenigsegg came from nowhere and took the lead. It's not over yet though, Bugatti plans to get the Chiron to do the fastest run soon, while Hennessey has introduced the Venom F5. They are kind of confident of doing a 300 mph run. That means one more shuffle of the top spot expected soon. Or maybe, many more shuffles in the near future.

Till such time here are the stats of the topper:

  • Top Speed: 277.9 mph (447.42 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.1 sec
  • Engine: V8 5.0 litres engine with 1160 hp
  • Price: $1.7 million

You can read more about the Agera RS here.

3. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

  • Top Speed: 267 mph (429.87 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.4 sec
  • Engine: W16 Engine with 1200 hp
  • Price: $2.4 million

Bugatti Veyron was crowned the fastest car, ending the reign of McLaren FI. This change, however, lasted for a brief period, when SSC Ultimate Aero was adjudged the fastest car in 2007. Bugatti went back to the drawing board and came back with the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which took the lead once again and remained at the top for nearly a decade. The Agera RS then toppled the Bugatti.

We know for sure that the Veyron is not going to be coming back, so this is the last of it. Veyron's successor, the Chiron, has to now fight for the top spot. Let's see if that happens.

The next car is the Hennessey Venom GT, the fastest accelerating car to 300 kmph in the world.

Bugatti Veyron vs. Koenigsegg Agera

4. Hennessey Venom GT

  • Top Speed: 270.49 mph (435.49 km/hr) (Not a record)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.5 sec
  • Engine: Twin Turbo V8 engine with 1200 hp
  • Price: $ 950,0000

Before the Agera RS, the Venom was the fastest driven car in the world, yet it remained behind the Bugatti Veyron. The record books accept a two way run within an hour for a car to establish the top speed. However, the Venom just did one way. NASA did not permit them to do the second run and that sealed the fate of Hennessey; at least for now. So, despite being the fastest run car, it still is second to the Bugatti and third in the overall list.

Will this change in the future? Yes, may be with the Hennessey Venom F5 but the GT will take to the history books at this spot.

Next one year would be the most exciting battle between Hennessey, Bugatti and Koenigsegg for the top spot!! Exciting for sure!

5. Bugatti Chiron [1500 hp]

This is the newest entrant. Though a speed run has not been done to test the top speed of the car, a 0 – 400 – 0 kmph test run did happen. So that confirms that the car can do 249 mph for sure. Also, it is claimed that the Chiron is speed limited at 261 mph so that we will assume as the top speed for now.

· Top Speed: 261 mph (420.21 kmph)

· Engine: 8-liter quad-turbocharged W16

· Power: 1479 hp

· Acceleration: 0 – 60 mph in 2.4 sec

Wait, so is the new Bugatti not going to attempt a speed record? Well, as it turns out the vehicle’s speedo reads up to 500 kmph or 310 mph but there is simply no production car tires available which can withstand the physics of such a run. So, the speed attempt may happen or may not. There is another school of thought which says that Chiron may be a bit cautious about the speed run considering the Agera RS bettered its 0-400-0 kmph record in no time. Maybe, the car just can’t beat the Agera RS’ current record of 477 mph. Who knows?

But here’s the thing – the Chiron is selling well. They have already sold 340 cars and the waiting list extends to three years. It’s already popular, so what exactly remains to be proved, anyway? Speed run or no speed run!

6. Koenigsegg Agera R

  • Top Speed: 260 mph (418.6 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.9 sec
  • Engine: Twin Turbo V8 engine with 1099 hp
  • Price: $ 1.6 million

Based on the top speed, the next spot belongs to two cars. As a tie breaker, when we look at the acceleration in conjunction with the top speed, the Ultimate Aero takes the spot.

7. SSC Ultimate Aero

  • Top Speed: 257 mph (413.77 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.7 sec
  • Engine: Twin Turbo V8 engine with 1183 hp
  • Price: $ 655,000

The Ultimate Aero dominated the number one spot between 2007 and 2010 until the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport toppled it. Now, even the Koenigsegg and the Hennessey Venom GT have gone faster. If reports are to be believed then SSC may soon attempt the number one spot with the SSC Tuatura. What a match that would be!!

8. 9ff GT9-R

  • Top Speed: 257 mph (413.77 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.9 sec
  • Engine: 4.0 litre-6 Twin Turbo Engine with 1120 hp
  • Price: $ 695,000

9. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo

  • Top Speed: 248 mph (399.28 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.8 sec
  • Engine: Twin Turbo V8 Engine with 750 hp
  • Price: $ 555,000

10. Koenigsegg CCX

  • Top Speed: 245 mph (394.45 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 3.2 sec
  • Engine: 90 degree V8 Engine with 800 hp
  • Price: $ 546,000

11. McLaren F1

  • Top Speed: 240 mph (386.4 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 3.2 sec
  • Engine: 60 degree V12 Engine with 627 hp
  • Price: $ 970,000

The McLaren F1 was the world’s fastest car till the beginning of this century. It is one of the few cars to have a gold coated engine. Once the fastest car, the McLaren F1 now finds its place way down the list.

12. Zenvo ST1

  • Top Speed: 233 mph (375.13 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 2.9 sec
  • Engine: 7.0 litre, twin-charged, V8 Engine with 1104 hp
  • Price: $ 1.225 million

13. Gumpert Apollo

  • Top Speed: 225 mph (362.25 km/hr)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in 3.0 sec
  • Engine: 4.8 litre, V8 Engine with 650 hp
  • Price: $ 450,000

Hello carphotoshop,

Thanks for your kind words and for stopping by! :)

carphotoshop from Bangladesh on February 23, 2019:

This is a cool looking car! Very interesting blog,Thanks for sharing!!!

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on September 17, 2018:

Yeah, chances of Jaguar I pace entering India faster is quite possible. After all, the current owner of Jaguar Land Rover is Tata, an India Company. So, we may just see that happening.

But Tesla is Tesla, I guess. :)

Pringgo Husin on September 16, 2018:

Yes, it is. I do hope that Tesla can enter the Indian market by next year. But, I'm sure the Jaguar i-Pace is a great option as well.

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on September 14, 2018:

Hey Pringgo Husin,

Overtaken by a Tesla - that sounds interesting. We are still to have Teslas here and it will be a year at least before we see the Tesla models. They intend to start with China and then India.

Beautiful piece of engineering those electric cars!

Pringgo Husin on September 14, 2018:

It sure is! The other day I was overtaken by a Tesla and it was glorious to see it overtaking me silently, and slowly vanishes. All I could see from afar is the bright LED lights.

The silent run is definitely a plus factor from an EV. It feels futuristic.

You're welcome.

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on September 13, 2018:

Hey Pringgo,

Doesn't it sound exciting to wait for such a day when we will have electric supercars? There is one other reason I like the EVs and that is for their silent run.

Can you imagine a day in the future where you will be doing a 300 kmph on your gasoline car and an electric car overtakes you silently, only to vanish at the horizon? The nomenclature "silent assassin" will have a whole new meaning!

Thanks for stopping by! :)

Pringgo Husin on September 13, 2018:

Yes, it absolutely is. The Tesla Roadster is indeed a serious competitor between the Rimac, even with the Concept 2, according to the specs sheet, Tesla can outrun better. However, I believe that a drag race between the two cars is needed.

Great video by the way. In the long-run, ICE car can definitely win the race, but in a short distanced race, the maximum torque from an EV is definitely an advantage. Once Koenigsegg has an electric version released to the public, I'm sure it will be the challenge of history where various supercars compares who has the fastest EV.

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on September 13, 2018:

Hello Pringgo Husin,

The Rimac Concept is a beauty, isn't it? We'll have to wait for the Tesla Roadster to come out to see the quickest ones. Of course, Tesla claims a 1.9 sec for 0-62 mph.

Now, the race with a gasoline car will always, initially, go the electric car's way because maximum torque is available for the electric car from the very start, but as both the cars reach top speed, the gasoline supercar will takeover. Besides, Rimac is electronically limited to 340 kmph.

Also, don't bother racing an electric supercar against a Lambo, in fact, even an electric SUV like Tesla Model X P100D can smoke a Lambo over a quarter mile. Here, take a look at the video in my article on the fastest SUV. The video is under Tesla in the 16th position.

Enjoy the video and the article! Hope you have your answer! :)

Pringgo Husin on September 12, 2018:

Koenigsegg never disappoints when it comes to speed and power. However, the interesting test that we haven't seen before is the Rimac Concept One vs any of the great supercars. The Rimac Concept One has 1200 bhp and from the recent Season 2 of The Grand Tour series, it crushed the Lamborghini Aventador S.

If the Rimac is to challenge the Koenigsegg Agera RS, who do you think will perform better?

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on July 26, 2018:

Hello BJ,

Rightly pointed out. The Koenigsegg is the record holder by all means. But what is interesting is that it is going to be a three-way battle for the top spot and mostly by this year itself if not next. The contenders are - Bugatti Chiron, Hennessey Venom F5 and the new successor to Koenigsegg Agera RS (which will be revealed in the Geneva Motor Show), expect my list to change soon.

Also, SSC Tuatara is kind of no-one-knows-what's-happening-there situation. I am watching them since 2014 but no speed runs or speed attempts yet. If you look at the top speeds for the Tuatara it is mentioned as "Estimated" which means the speed run not made yet. I sure hope SSC also comes up with something. If that happens it would be a four-way battle. How cool is that?

Till such time Koenigsegg is the king!!

Baby Jesus on July 26, 2018:

Dumb u poor fools the RS goes 277 how is u syill thinking the hennesy venom is still the fastest is still 7 miles short and the Tautara is as well 7 or i think 4 miles short anyway koneigseg RULES!!!

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on May 05, 2015:

Hello Fredric,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Well, if you read the updates on SSC Tuatara, it has done some speed runs and SSC claims that it will be able to achieve the mentioned top speed. The car has not done it yet. When it does and if it is actually able to achieve the top speed, rest assured, it will figure here.

Fredric Xavier on May 05, 2015:

You are Both wrong the ssc North America tuatara has been proven in the record books to be the fastest car on earth

Quarter mile 8.1 at 178 mph

Top speed 276 mph electric hybrid (:

Savio Koman (author) from Mumbai, India on March 13, 2014:

Nope hahn,

You are wrong on both counts. Hennessey Venom GT although did a fast run of 435 kmph (beating Bugatti) it did not make the record books because it is required that the cars do both ways run. Also the SSC Tuatara is an anticipated speed and not tested by the record books yet. If you go by that then the SSC Tuatara will be the fastest at 273 mph and then the Venom and then Bugatti.. However, if they have not made to the record books, they don't make it to this list either.

hahn on March 13, 2014:

ur wrong the Hennessey Venom GT is the fastest car next to the ssc tuatara. the venom goes 270 not 260 and the ssc is the same way.
