Replacing the Rear Hub Bearing on a Lexus or Toyota

A high-pitched whining noise, becoming louder as the speed of the car increases, may be due to a worn wheel hub bearing. Out-of-balance rear tires may cause this problem by wearing out the rear wheel hub bearing.

On most Toyota and Lexus passenger vehicles, the rear wheel hub and bearing are integrated as one component and fastened to the rear wheel knuckle with four (4) bolts. To remove and replace the hub-and-bearing assembly, you need to remove the rear brake caliber assembly and brake rotor.

This article with video details the steps involved in replacing the rear wheel hub and bearing on a 1999 Lexus ES300. The following models use this bearing:

  • '92-'01 Lexus ES300
  • '95-'04 Toyota Avalon
  • '92-'01 Toyota Camry
  • '99-'03 Solara

No special tools are required. This is a moderately difficult job.

Steps Involved in Rear Hub and Bearing Replacement

I. Removing the Brake Caliper and Brake Rotor

1. Unbolt the rear brake line from the rear suspension strut.

2. Remove the two (2) bolts that secure the rear brake caliper bracket (with the pads and caliper attached).

3. Pull the rear brake caliper assembly off of the rear brake rotor.

4. Remove the rear brake rotor. If the rotor is stuck due to rust, apply hammer blows between the wheel lugs to loosen the rust and relieve the tension. If this doesn't work, take the 12-mm bolt that holds the brake line to the rear suspension strut and screw it into one of the two holes in the brake rotor. Torquing down on the bolt will force the rotor to break free from the wheel hub.

II. Removing the Rear Wheel Hub and Bearing Assembly

1. Spin the wheel hub until the large hole in the hub is visually in line with one of the four bolts that hold the wheel hub to the suspension knuckle.

2. Remove each of the four bolts, one by one, spinning the position of the wheel hub to align the hole with each bolt in turn. Use a magnetized wand to ease removal of each bolt.

3. Remove the wheel hub. Note that the upper hub mounting points are wider than the lower mounting points.

4. Remove the oil or grease O-ring from the center ring of the suspension knuckle.

III. Installing the New Wheel Hub Bearing

1. Install a new O-ring gasket on the suspension knuckle where the new wheel hub will be mounted.

2. (Optional) Apply additional wheel bearing grease to the new wheel hub.

3. Mount the new wheel hub on to the suspension knuckle. Ensure that the high wide side part of the bolt mounting holes is pointing up and the low narrow side part is pointing down.

4. Being screwing on each of the wheel hub mounting bolts through the wheel hub hole. Apply the final tightening torque after all the bolts have been threaded.

IV. Installing the Brake Rotor and Brake Caliper Assembly

1. Install the rear brake rotor. The rotor can be held fast by fastening one lug nut onto a wheel lug; this will prevent the rotor from wobbling around while you are installing the brake caliper assembly.

2. Install the brake caliper assembly back onto the suspension knuckle by positioning the brake rotor between the brake pads within the brake caliper assembly.

3. Align the brake caliper assembly mounting holes with the suspension knuckle holes and fasten the two (2) brake caliper bolts onto the suspension knuckle.

4. Bolt the rear brake line to the rear suspension strut.
